Hazardous Waste

When household hazardous waste (HHW) ends up in the regular trash or is poured down sinks or storm drains, it becomes a problem for the entire community and the environment. Proper HHW disposal helps keep our communities safe and clean.

Holiday trees and lights

When the holidays are over and it’s time to take down your natural holiday trees, wreaths and garland, give them a second life by recycling them. Find a local tree recycling center or pick-up service in your area.

Have your holiday lights lost their sparkle? There are recycling options for those too.

What can go in my curbside bin?

To bin, or not to bin? Now there’s no question! This handy flier lists what you can and can’t put in your curbside recycling bin. Available for download in 11 x 17 and 8.5 x 11 sizes.

What about….

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions for items that don’t go in your curbside bin.

Electronics

While most of us know how to recycle paper, plastic bottles or aluminum cans, many people don’t know how to properly dispose of old computers, cellphones and other electronic devices.

Styrofoam

Any type of Styrofoam™ that has had contact with food and beverages is not recyclable: takeout boxes, egg cartons, cups, meat trays, etc.

Only Styrofoam™ blocks, forms, sheets and coolers are recyclable at Atlas Molded Products (formerly ACH Foam Technologies), 1400 N. 3rd St., Kansas City, KS 66101, (913) 371-1973.

Plastic bags and film

Plastic bags and film are not recyclable curbside or at recycling centers.

Check with your local grocery store or take them to the nearest retail location that recycles them. The following retail chains often recycle plastic bags.
