It is free to recycle cans, paper, cardboard, plastic containers and bags, and glass for all residents in the Kansas City metro area (you do not have to live in Leavenworth County). Does not pay for any items accepted.

Please recycle right:

  • Plastic - Only recycle bottles and tubs with resin codes #1, #2 and #5.
  • Keep items loose (do not put in bags or boxes).
  • Rinse containers, do not crush.
  • Flatten boxes.
  • No food
  • No liquid
  • Put caps and lids back on plastic bottles and tubs.
  • Remove shrink sleeves from plastic bottles.
  • Collect metal caps and lids in steel/tin can and squeeze shut before recycling.
  • Leave labels on containers, tape on boxes, windows on envelopes, staples and paper clips on paper.

Electronics - Only accepts cell phones, computers, computer monitors, printers, DVD players, TVs, VCRs, speakers and other small electronics. 

Glass - No TVs, mirrors, light bulbs, windshields/safety glass, fiberglass, or these glass-like items: ceramic, china, porcelain, milk glass, Pyrex, Corningware, Corelle.

Lawn Mowers - All fluids must be completely drained before bringing them to be recycled.  

Hazardous Waste:

  • Leavenworth, Kans. residents only.
  • No appointment required. 
  • Accepts waste from businesses that are Small Quantity Generators. Businesses include: for-profits, nonprofits, churches, schools, home-based businesses, and rental property owners. More info>>
  • Does NOT accept: appliances, asbestos, biological waste, commercial waste, controlled substances, electronics, explosives, prescription drugs, medical waste, pressurized gas cylinders (except 1 lb. camp stove / lantern tanks), smoke detectors, tires, and yard waste.

Holiday Lights - Do not accept lights embedded in artificial trees and greenery.

Holiday Trees - Natural holiday trees and greenery. Must remove all plastic and metal components such as lights, decorations, plastic bags and stands. Accepted Dec. 1, 2023 – Jan. 31, 2024 only.

Large appliance refrigerant removal - Provides certified refrigerant removal from dehumidifiers, air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators, etc. 

Tires - Accepted for a fee.
